Paul is patron of Cue And Review, the talking news service for blind and partially sighted people. The service allows subscribers to access newspapers and magazines which are read by volunteers each day. He has been patron for over 30 years.

Paul is a patron of Ataxia UK, the charity that funds medical research in to the gene disorders that cause the loss of mobility and coordination from teenage years through to end of life. He has been a patron for over 20 years.

Paul is a patron, and contributes programmes to, Hospital Radio Service Glasgow, a station staffed by volunteers, broadcasting to patients in many hospitals in the west of Scotland.

Paul is a founding member of What Is More, a think tank started by Lord Sandy Leitch to explore ideas of destiny, purpose, common ground amongst faiths, and what more people should expect from life.
